No key, or a chewed key
A lost key and a rounded key are the same job. The nut is made not to come off, so it comes off with the proper removal tools and some patience, not a hammer and a socket that nearly fits.
What goes back on
Once the locking nut is out, a plain nut goes in its place, so the wheel comes off next time without a key.
If you want locking nuts again, buy a new set with its own key, and write the key code somewhere that is not the car.
When it usually turns up
The day a tyre goes flat. That is when most people find out the key went back somewhere else after the last service, often in a retail car park with the boot emptied onto the tarmac: Lewisham Shopping Centre, Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, IKEA Greenwich.
