Before anything else
Hazards on. Everyone out on the pavement side, not the traffic side. If there is no pavement, stand well back from the carriageway.
If the car is stuck in a live lane and cannot be moved, get clear of it and call 999 first. A tyre can wait for that.
Where the car can be worked on
A side street, a retail car park, a lay-by, a stretch of wide kerb where the traffic goes past rather than at you. The car is not jacked in a running lane.
If you have stopped somewhere worse, roll to the next safe turning at walking pace. A rim can take that.
Spare, space‑saver or a new tyre
A full-size spare in the boot can go on. A space-saver can go on too, and you will be told the speed limit printed on it.
Plenty of cars now carry a foam kit and no spare at all. Then the size off the sidewall matters, because the new tyre comes on the van.
What to send
The street and the nearest junction or shop. Which side of the road. The car, and the tyre size if you can read it. Whether there is a locking wheel nut, and where the key is.
Send the street and the job. The price comes back before the van moves.
